“And Joseph said unto his brethren, Come near to me, I pray you. And they came near. And he said, I am Joseph your brother, whom ye sold into Egypt. Now therefore be not grieved, nor angry with yourselves, that ye sold me hither: for God did send me before you to preserve life.” Gen. 45:4-5
Joseph had no idea, when his coat was stripped from him and he was thrown in the pit, how his story would play out. When he was accused of an affair or sitting in jail, completely forgotten. BUT God, with him through it all, saw a bigger picture. And at the end of the story, Joseph could say, “for God did send me before you to preserve life”. Oh to have this perspective. He could have been bitter and angry with God. He could have killed his brothers in vengeance. He had that power then, but instead he gave them undeserved grace and forgiveness. He chose to trust.
Like Joseph, I have a choice. This isn’t how I imagined my story. Loss, heartache, domestic violence, divorced, single mom. Those were not my plans. BUT God sees a bigger picture in my life too. He has been with me every single step. He’s collected every tear. I love this prayer from a book I’ve been reading, “Bring me to a new place of freedom where I can boldly say this in the aftermath of a painful story: ‘It was God who sent me here’.” – Mary DeMuth, Jesus Every Day
Father, help me have this kind of perspective. Fix my eyes not on the circumstances around me or the mistakes I’ve made, but on You. Heal the wounds that only You can heal. Set my feet on Your firm foundation. Help me walk in Your full freedom. Bind my mind to You!
Only You, Jesus. Only You.
